Another part of the wine business curriculum is very relevant to what is happening at Major Crush.
As part of the community we’re building, we’re striving to help bring our fans, followers, and friends wines that are made by 97% of winemakers in the US that will never make it to a grocery store shelf directly to your door.
Let me elaborate…
Most of the wines on grocery store shelves are owned by three big conglomerates. While our main goal is for more people to crush on wines no matter the source, we also hope to enlighten people about all the delicious wines they might never see or experience without our help!
As part of the WSET Wine Business class, I’m entrenched in the "three-tier system," which is what impedes many small wineries from getting their wines into these markets. The three tiers are:
- Producer (Winery)
- Retailers (grocery store, wine shop, restaurant, bar, etc)
When wine is required to go through this system, it increases the price per bottle because each tier needs to make a profit from the sale. There is also a great deal of bureaucracy involved, which often plays a role in what wines can and can't be sold and where consumers can find these wines.
I'd rather not bore you with all of the details, but I do want to tell you all of this to elevate your understanding of how the business of selling wine works so you might be encouraged to seek smaller wine brands. Major Crush is hoping to help you do this, too! And while we know we can’t change the three-tier system, we’re creating a way to help more of the small wineries get their wines directly to you.
